How do I start a Marvel Tokon beginner session?

Ignore perfect combo routes on day one. Your job is to keep the Lead readable, spend Assists on purpose, and leave the lab with one comfortable team.

  • Do01Pick one of the five starter teams and stick with it for the whole session
  • Do02Enable Training Mode input display and reset often
  • Do03Practice walk, dash (L1 or double-forward), jump, and a short grounded string on the Lead
  • Do04Call each Assist once with Neutral/→, ↓, and ← + Assemble (×)
  • Do05Practice Assist → L2 Switch when the Switch window appears
  • Do06Play three casual or CPU sets before changing teams

Use Start Up Battle and Character Guides

The game ships with Start Up Battle and in-game Character Guides. Run those before you invent your own curriculum — they teach the same button groups this Marvel Tokon tutorial assumes: Light □, Medium △, Heavy ○, Assemble ×, Dash L1, Quick Assemble L2, Unique R1, Quick Skill R2.

One team beats roster tourism

Twenty launch characters across five teams is a lot. Tourist-picking Magik for one set, Spider-Man for the next, and Doom for the third teaches nothing about Assist timing. Lock a squad, then expand with the roster and teams pages.

Shared HP is the next rule that changes how every trade feels — read it before you spam supers.

How does shared team HP change every trade?

All four fighters share one vital gauge. A KO drains the opposing team’s shared bar; sets are multi-round — confirm the exact win count in Ranked / Casual rules before you grind. That means a “winning” Lead still loses if Assists never convert and Switch never resets bad situations.

Old 1v1 habitMarvel Tokon reality
Protect only the character on pointEvery hit lands on the same team bar
Save partners for later roundsPartners are tools now — unused Assists waste HP efficiency
All-in alone for the killAssist cover + Switch often beats raw solo damage
Ignore stage wallsWall Break is a team finishing tool, not free damage every exchange

Assemble gauge sits under vital

Official beginner materials place the Assemble gauge under the vital gauge. Assists, Assemble Rush / Smash style team tools, Assemble Counter, and related team actions spend that resource. Do not dump the gauge on the first exchange if you need a cover later.

Matches unlock partners over time

Fights emphasize a Lead with partners unlocking through damage, throws, round loss, Wall Break, or pushing into the next stage area. Early pressure may feel closer to a smaller format before the full four-fighter fantasy arrives — so practice Assist calls even when only part of the squad is active.

Next: assign jobs so Point, mid, and Assist partners stop overlapping.

What should my Lead and Assists actually do?

Think in roles before you open a tier list. Official messaging stresses that you do not need to master all four fighters — one strong Lead plus usable Assists is enough to play complete matches.

RoleJob on day one
Point / LeadStart rounds, hold neutral, land a short confirm you trust
2nd teammate (N/→ Assemble)Your default Assist convert or cover
3rd teammate (↓ Assemble)Anti-air / situational Assist — lab the animation once
4th teammate (← Assemble)Assault-style Assist / panic tool — know the call
Switch partnerWhoever you tag when the Lead is stuck or the matchup flips

Beginner-friendly Leads from official notes

PlayStation’s beginner materials call out Captain America, Ms. Marvel, and Wolverine as friendlier starting Leads, while Storm and Danger lean more advanced. Use that as a training hint, not a permanent tier list — rankings live on the tier list once community data settles.

Assist quality beats comic popularity

A flashy Lead with empty Assists loses to a boring Lead whose partners cover approaches. When you shortlist a team on the teams page, ask who covers your worst gap — projectile, anti-air, or rushdown — not who looks coolest on the splash art.

Roles only matter if you press the team buttons on time — next section.

When do I call Assist, Switch, or Assemble?

Team tools are the heart of how to play Marvel Tokon. Memorize the official direction map once, then stop looking at the pad mid-round.

Marvel Tokon beginner Assist call and short confirm loop
InputWhat it does
Neutral or → + Assemble (×)Call 2nd teammate Assist
↓ + AssembleCall 3rd teammate Assist
← + AssembleCall 4th teammate Assist
Direction + L2 (Quick Assemble)Attempt a direct Switch to that teammate
Assist hits, then L2Switch during the Switch window

Assist vs Switch vs Assemble Rush

Assist brings a partner in without permanently leaving the Lead. Switch tags a partner to point when the window appears. Assemble Rush / Smash style follow-ups (detailed on the Assemble guide) spend Assemble gauge for stronger team payoffs after you already landed something.

Decision table mid-match

Use this scan when you freeze under pressure:

SituationPrefer
Lead confirm landed, need damageAssist convert → optional Switch
Blocked / stuck in a stringCrossover (while blocking) or Switch escape
Opponent whiffs a big attackAssemble Counter (not blocking) if gauge allows
Near wall with a confirmRoute toward Wall Break, then reset
Gauge low, round still longSave Assist; play Lead neutral

Next: map controls, then Assemble

How do I block, Crossover, and Assemble Counter?

Offense gets the highlight reels; defense wins your first ranked sets. Official defaults:

Defense toolInput / note
Standing GuardHold ←
Crouching GuardHold ↙
Assemble Counter□ + × while not blocking — retreat and auto-counter on attack
Crossover□ + × while blocking — partner interrupts (official beginner video also calls this Crossover Reflect)
Crossover Reflect (perfect)Same □ + × while blocking, timed as opponent’s crossover bar fills — drains their Assemble gauge

Block first, fancy later

New players mash Counter and die. Hold the correct guard height, then add Crossover when you recognize a string you cannot duck forever. Assemble Counter spends Assemble gauge — treat it like a resource, not a panic mash.

When defense feels stable, move into Training Mode drills below.

What should I drill in Training Mode?

Keep sessions short and measurable. Leave with one cleaner habit, not fifteen unfinished routes.

  • Do01Light auto-route (tap □ repeatedly) and Medium / Heavy auto-routes once each
  • Do02One Command Input Skill and the matching Quick Skill (R2) — feel the damage / gauge tradeoff
  • Do03All three Assist directions on your team
  • Do04Assist → L2 Switch on hit and on block
  • Do05One standing and one crouching guard string from a recorded CPU
  • Do06One Crossover attempt while blocking a recorded string

Quick Skill vs Command Input

Quick Skill (R2, remappable) fires skills with a single press — best for beginners and fast confirms. Command Input (classic motions) deals slightly more damage and builds a bit more Skill Gauge. Lab both; default to Quick Skill until confirms are automatic.

Which starter team should I pick first?

Any of the five launch squads works. Pick the fantasy you will actually practice, then stick with it.

TeamLineupBeginner note
Fighting AvengersCaptain America, Iron Man, Black Panther (Shuri), HulkCap is an official beginner-friendly Lead
Unbreakable X-MenStorm, Magik, Wolverine, DangerWolverine friendly; Storm / Danger advanced
Amazing GuardiansSpider-Man, Ms. Marvel, Star-Lord, Peni ParkerMs. Marvel listed as beginner-friendly
Samurai OutridersGhost Rider, Blade, Loki, DeadpoolHigh personality kits — lab Assists early
Knights of DoomDoctor Doom, Magneto, Green Goblin, CarnageDoom / Magneto tools reward patient Assists

X-Men search demand

If you already came for Magik or Danger, open their pages after one lab session: Magik · Danger. Do not skip Assist drills just because you want the character page first.

Mistakes that dump your shared HP

Scan this table mid-session when rounds feel “unfair.” Most day-one losses are process errors.

What should I study next?
